Soldier clutches US flag on flight from Kabul amid evacuation: report

An American soldier desperately clutched a US flag as he boarded a aircraft out of Afghanistan on Sunday amid the chaotic and fatal evacuation after the Taliban regained handle of the region.

The sobering impression, 1st attained by Fox News, has emerged displaying a soldier cradling the Stars and Stripes at Kabul’s worldwide airport right after it was hurriedly taken down from the US Embassy.

The airport immediately descended into chaos Monday soon after 1000’s of Afghans trapped by the sudden Taliban takeover rushed the tarmac — even clinging to US military services planes deployed to fly out staffers of the embassy and others.

At minimum 7 people died in the chaos, such as two who clung to the wheels of a C-17 transport plane and plunged to the tarmac moments later as it flew away.

It wasn’t promptly distinct if the soldier carrying the flag was on a person of those flights that Afghans desperately experimented with to battle their way onto.

The flag was taken down as the embassy was evacuated and shut down late Sunday when the Taliban commenced arriving in the town.

In scenes reminiscent of the Saigon evacuation in 1975, some American diplomats had been flown by helicopter from the embassy to Kabul’s airport.

It arrives as a defiant President Biden rejected blame for chaotic scenes of Afghans clinging to the military planes.

He known as the anguish of trapped Afghan civilians “gut-wrenching” and conceded that the Taliban had accomplished a significantly more rapidly takeover of the country than his administration had predicted.

But he expressed no second views about his conclusion to stick by the US commitment, formulated for the duration of the Trump administration, to withdraw from Afghanistan and close America’s longest war.

Even with declaring that “the buck stops with me,” Biden placed practically all blame for the shockingly speedy Taliban conquest on the Afghans themselves.
