Nobel Prize honors US scientists David Julius, Ardem Patapoutian for discovery of temperature, touch receptors


STOCKHOLM — The Nobel Prize in the area of physiology or medicine has been awarded to U.S.-based scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian.

They ended up cited for their discovery of receptors for temperature and touch.

The winners were announced Monday by Thomas Perlmann, secretary-typical of the Nobel Committee.

Patrik Ernfors of the Nobel Committee reported Julius, 65, employed capsaicin, the energetic ingredient in chili peppers, to establish the nerve sensors that permit the pores and skin to reply to warmth.

Patapoutian discovered different stress-sensitive sensors in cells that reply to mechanical stimulation, he mentioned.

“This really unlocks 1 of the secrets of character,” claimed Perlmann. “It’s basically anything that is critical for our survival, so it is a really important and profound discovery.”

The pair also shared the prestigious Kavli Award for Neuroscience very last year.

Last year’s Nobel drugs prize went to three researchers who uncovered the liver-ravaging hepatitis C virus, a breakthrough that led to cures for the deadly ailment and exams to continue to keep the scourge from spreading even though blood banks.

The prestigious award arrives with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (about $1.14 million). The prize money arrives from a bequest remaining by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.

The prize is the initially to be awarded this year. The other prizes are for exceptional work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics.
