Confederate General Robert E. Lee statue removed in Virginia


A towering statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that is just one of America’s most significant monuments to the Confederacy was hosted off its pedestal and taken out Wednesday to cheers in Richmond, Virginia — where it has stood for around a century.

The 21-foot statue was eradicated with the assist of a crane and a staff of building workers who experienced strapped a dazzling orange harness all around the overall body of Lee and his horse.

The bronzed statue has been in the middle of a traffic circle on Richmond’s Monument Avenue for 130 years.

Gov. Northam live-streamed the removing of that statue on Twitter.

“Any remnant like this that glorifies the Dropped Lead to of the Civil War, it needs to appear down,” Northam mentioned, including that statue represents “more than 400 years of heritage that we should not be very pleased of.”

Police closed off streets in the vicinity in advance of the statue’s removing and set up group-control obstacles all around viewing locations.

It arrives soon after statues of Lee and Confederate Gen Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson ended up eradicated from Charlottesville, Virginia in July.
